Schreibt Henryk M. Broder, der darüber hinaus weiß, "was sich alles in den letzten 20 Jahren geändert hat", aber sich nicht vorstellen kann, "was sich in den kommenden 20 Jahren ändern wird."

Das ist etwas phantasielos. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass die Fortschritte der künstlichen Intelligenz es meinem Computer ermöglichen werden, den für mich interessanten Schrott aus dem Internet herauszusuchen. Dabei wird er hoffentlich auch gleich Texte auf die Kernaussage zusammenschrumpfen:

"Bücher und das Internet [sind] nur Werkzeuge, die erst in der Hand ihrer Benutzer zu etwas Gutem oder etwas Schlechtem mutieren. [...] Was daraus wird, hängt von uns ab."

Wir werden uns nicht mehr vorstellen können, wie wir ohne diese Funktion leben konnten. Ungläubig werden uns unsere Kinder angucken und fragen, ob wir den ganzen Schrott denn wirklich selber lesen mussten.

"Ja", werden wir sagen, "und stellt euch vor, manche Autoren wurden sogar pro Wort bezahlt oder mussten Texte mit einer bestimmten Länge schreiben."

"Das erklärt vieles!"

Nach dem Betreten der Hallen durch den Nordeingang wähnte ich mich zunächst auf einer Millionärsmesse, was weniger an den 5€ Eintritt plus 3€ für's Parken lag¹, sondern an den vielen Angeboten, die sich nur an Hausbesitzer richteten. Besonders beeindruckend war die große Auswahl an Pelletöfen, mit denen man sich beim nächsten Gasstreit beruhigt im mollig warmen kamelhaarbezogenen Massivholzsessel zurück lehnen könnte - vorausgesetzt, man musste den noch nicht verfeuern, was mit einigen der ausgestellten Öfen problemlos möglich wäre.

Diesen Fokus auf Hauseigentümer kannte ich schon von anderen Publikumsmessen in Luxemburg. Glücklicherweise hatte die Oeko-Foire aber noch viel mehr zu bieten und wurde Ihrem Anspruch, sämtliche Bereiche des täglichen Lebens zu vertreten, weitgehend gerecht.

Zwar waren mir viele der Aussteller und Ihre Produkte schon bekannt, aber auch hier gab es einiges zu entdecken und zu lernen, so weiß ich jetzt z.B., wie Hëpperdanger Käse entsteht (viel Handarbeit), welche Mehlsorten im Moulin J.P. Dieschbourg hergestellt werden und dass Tee Gschwendner nun auch einen Online-Shop in Luxemburg betreibt.

Auch ist mir nun bekannt, wo in Luxemburg ich ein Elektrofahrzeug kaufen könnte, wenn ich das nötige Kleingeld hierfür hätte.

Aufgrund der häufig unterentwickelten Websites Luxemburger Unternehmen sind dies Beispiele für Informationen, die man außerhalb der Messe nur mit hohem Rechercheaufwand gefunden hätte - wenn überhaupt.

Abgesehen vom Informations- und Unterhaltungswert konnte man auf der Oeko-Foire auch einkaufen, neben Textilien vor allem Backwaren und Gemüse (wobei aber jeder normale Supermarkt den Vorteil hat, dass es dort Einkaufswagen gibt).

Was weitgehend fehlte waren Aussteller zum Thema "umweltfreundlicher Tourismus", mehr als Karten und Bücher mit Fahrrad- und Wanderrouten sind mir hierzu nicht aufgefallen.

Mein insgesamt positiver Eindruck wurde durch die professionell durchgeführten vegetarischen Kochvorführungen abgerundet.

You might have read about the zombie cows dangling by their feet at Charal's slaughterhouse line in Metz. Maybe you've even seen the videos (here, here or here) which were secretly taken by a member of the French animal rights organization L214 (viewer discretion is advised, although the scenes are not quite as bad as those in Earthlings).

Charal's response? They seem to have threatened L214's web host with legal action, forcing the organization to take down the report and the videos from their website¹.

This just has me shaking my head in utter disbelief. As a company with an annual turnover of about a billion euros, Charal should be able to hire qualified people to do the job.

If I were a PR consultant, here's what I would tell Charal.

"Cow-torturing internet-censoring greedy assholes"

What's the average consumer going to think now when he sees your products in the supermarket? Probably something like: "Charal, aren't they those cow-torturing internet-censoring greedy assholes?"

Let's face it: The scenes in the slaughterhouse were ugly. They look like you're willing to cause unnecessary suffering just to have your factory run faster and make more money.

This is bad because consumers should believe that they matter most to you, not your bottom line.

What you have to do now is to grow a pair and say: "It might look ugly, but we only do this for you, our esteemed customers."

"Stamina-giving properties" - it's natural Viagra

Then you should explain how dogs are traditionally slaughtered in some Asian countries:

To make dog meat more tasty and to increase it's stamina-giving properties, many dogs are tortured, perhaps hung for a while, beaten, burned with a blow torch, boiled alive, or slowly bled out--it all helps to increase their sheer terror the dog feels and thus boosts the adrenaline in its flesh.

Say it with me: "If it works for dogs, why shouldn't it work for cows? The only reason we torture them is to make their meat more tasty!"

That'll earn you the respect and sympathy of Gourmands everywhere. It'll also solve your legal problems: If the law says you have to avoid any unnecessary suffering you can simply claim that the suffering documented in the video is - "unfortunately" - absolutely necessary because otherwise the meat tastes like crap.

After reading this long but excellent article about Craigslist on WIRED I checked if there's a Craigslist Luxembourg by now and was surprised to see that it actually exists. It's mostly empty, but it's definitely there:

A while ago, while doing research for my blog about the economic crisis in Luxembourg¹, I went to the ABBL's website and was greeted with a big headline which read:

"Luxembourg does not exploit poor countries"

Would you eat at a restaurant which prominently announces that it "does absolutely not use rotten meat"? Doesn't it make you wonder why they'd feel the need to mention this?

It turned out a study by the Luxembourgish NGO Cercle de Coopération had accused Luxembourg of "siphoning off considerable amounts of money from developing countries by illegal or at the least illegitimate means". I made a bookmark in order to have a closer look at the study another day².

Unfortunately, as I learned (again) today, the world doesn't wait for me: The NGO has distanced itself from the study and a critique of the study by Luxembourg for Finance CEO Fernand Grulms was taken down form the ABBL's and the Tageblatt's website.

Which, of course, is why I now have to blog about this stuff. I can't write about Kaupthing's leaked secret document and the censorship in Icelandic media³ while ignoring this case of potential censorship right here in Luxembourg.

So what happened?

I have no idea, but I since I'm a blogger I'll just speculate:

1. The NGO realized its study wasn't that great and took it down while Fernand Grulms realized his critique of the "study"⁴ wasn't that great either and took it down, too. And peace was once again restored in the Grand-Duchy. Of course, this explanation is boring, which is why I present no. 2:
   
2. Some powerful and rich person with a strong interest in keeping things under the rug (maybe an African warlord, South American politician or your average Luxembourgish house owner) gave a lot of money to everyone to STFU.

I like the second explanation because it involves money. I like money and my Lux-MRT project has not really taken off yet, most likely due to a lack of funds (please note there's a donation button on the right). So yes, I'm speculating this mysterious person is going to give me a lot of money to delete this post, too. I'll then simply claim it wasn't really that great to begin with, which wouldn't even be a lie (genius!).

Now please excuse me, in order to prepare for my upcoming sudden increase in wealth I have to go watch season 9 episode 14 of the Simpsons again. You know, the one where Homer starts his own dot-com company, Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net⁵, which is later bought out by Bill Gates. That's how you do it.
